Welcome to the ‘Understanding Careers – My Child’s Future’ website. The website is brought to you by Careers Advice (a member of the Connexions Thames Valley Group of companies) and is part of a package of costed support to parents and carers.
We know that parents and carers are the most important influence on young people when they are making their decision about careers. Progression into Higher Education is one such key career decision. With the number of available places shrinking and the introduction of higher education fees, increased competition and financial considerations make this particular decision even more challenging.
The website’s aim is to help you to help your son or daughter work through their choices about Higher Education and make the right decision for them. You could also work through elements of the site alongside your son/daughter or send them links to the sections you want to highlight.
Once you have worked your way through all the material, you will be able to:
- Understand the graduate labour market
- Explore the employment prospects of graduates in terms of subject choice
- Consider future employment opportunities for graduates and the relevance of a higher education qualification
- Understand how to choose between universities and courses
- Investigate key data sources to understand what is happening in your local labour market, the national and international contexts in which we live and work
The website is designed to be used by parents and carers to help you support your son or daughter with their careers choices in relation to Higher Education. The website is built to be a ‘self-facilitating learning experience’ so you can work through the site individually and at your own pace. As you browse the site and begin to use the interactive elements we hope you feel your knowledge about Higher Education choices and where to go for further information develops.
We welcome feedback on this resource and comments can be sent to info [at] cxtv [dot] org [dot] uk (just click on the link and it will open in your email programme). You can also post comments to help other parents in the ‘Comments from Other Parents’ section.
